Agricultural Safety Council

Formed to Reduce Farm Accidents

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- A new organization, the Agricultural Safety and Health Council of America, was recently formed to work toward making farming safer.

Agriculture is consistently among the most hazardous occupations in the United States, according to Dennis Murphy, Penn State Distinguished Professor of Agricultural Safety and Health, a founding board member of the new council. In an average year, 516 workers die while doing farm work, and each day about 243 agricultural workers suffer lost-time injuries.

Fire Department Information - Interpreting Hay Temperature Readings

With the large number of hay barn fires, this chart will give you an idea to assist a farmer in making the determination to take action BEFORE a fire can occur.

FARM AND AGRICULTURAL EMERGENCY INCIDENT RESPONSE FORM

In an effort to track incidents (types, numbers, etc.) there is an Emergency Incident Response Form on this website.  If you or your agency responds to a farm or agricultural related incident, please take a moment to complete the form.  This is used to assist in developing and targeting farm rescue and safety initiatives.

**NOTE: Of special interest are ATV incidents related to farming activities.  In addition due to the increased numbers that have occurred, information on barn or silo fires caused by spontaneous combustion is requested.
